Let It Happen: Xie Bei Solo Exhibition
Upcoming exhibition
Press release
This exhibition focuses on Xie Bei's creative work over the past decade. In these images, materials and colors no longer serve merely as auxiliary tools for constructing narrative loops. Through “destructive” techniques like collage, overlay, and scraping, they collectively become silent narrators bearing the traces of time and space alongside traumatic memories—the former preserving materiality through duration, the latter conveying emotion through expressionist strokes. At the same time, Xie Bei rearranges the fragmented poems he jots down in daily life, or a phrase or passage he happens to read, alongside images, allowing them to collectively form the titles of his works. Thus, painting and writing, vision and language, form a mutually reflective dialogue: the image provides a visual space for words to dwell, while words open the boundaries of the image's imagination. It is amidst this tension that Xie Bei leaves room for interpretation for the audience—the work's meaning refuses to be predetermined. Through the metamorphosis of materials and the mutual questioning between text and image, it settles layers of history, destined to endure into the future.
