JALEECA YANCY: Mother Nature's Daughter

5 - 31 March 2022
Overview

In honor of Women's History Month, Urevbu Contemporary is honored to present Mother Nature’s Daughter, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Jaleeca R. Yancy. This exhibition centers around themes of womanhood, inherited wisdom, and ancestral memory as demonstrated in Yancy’s vibrant, energetically-painted textiles. Her innovative techniques are born from an anti-waste mindset and eco-friendly materials. Incorporating the soft and vivid tones of indigo, saffron, and other botanical dyes, Yancy creates abstract expressions that reveal a link between nature and the feminine mind, body, and soul. She plays with the methodology of color-field painting and the technique of shibori dying to yield a completed textile that is the result of months of dying, binding, dipping, drying, and rinsing. Yancy cites Sojourner Truth’s powerful “Ain’t I a Woman?”, the iconic quilts of Gee’s Bend, and the unapologetic women of the past, present, and future as the inspiration for Mother Nature’s Daughter. She hopes her work is a visual encouragement to today’s women, prompting them to take up space, reclaim power, heal, and grow.
